How Your Project Will Be Handled By Africa Business Venture

Step 1: Project Delivery Manager will be assigned to you

Upon receipt of your project by Africa Business Venture, a dedicated Project Delivery Manager will be assigned to your project within 2 business days. He/Her will contact you directly by email and organise a video call or a meeting.

Step 2: Your project will be reviewed by ABV

In order for ABV to select the best consultants for our clients, we need to ensure that projects are viable and not premature. During your first call/meeting with your Project Delivery Manager, your requirements for the project will be reviewed. Your Project Delivery Manager will give you suggestions for drafting your request for a project.

Step 3: Your project will be made visible to our partners

Upon validation by your Project Delivery Manager of your project, it will be made available online and our partners will be notified. Interviews will be conducted on your behalf, by ABV.

Step 4: You will receive a written proposal from our consultants

We will select the top consultants for your project to assist you. Your consultant will submit his/her proposal and their estimated fee. The consultant will contact you directly for a video call or meeting. Following the call, your Project Delivery Manager will contact you to find out whether you are happy with our consultant selection.

Step 5: The consultant and you, the client, will agree on the terms of business

You will sign an agreement with your consultant. Your consultant will be requested to submit the projects timelines and deliverables on our platform and you will be notified to approve the changes to the project and for you to qualify the project as being assigned.

Step 6: Enjoy your success!

The engagement process is now over but your Project Delivery Manager is still available throughout the project to ensure that work is done to your satisfaction.

What Are Africa Business Venture Payment Terms For Projects?

Africa Business Venture (ABV) has been designed to secure a fast and efficient way for clients to engage with consultants, track their project progress and to pay their consultants.

Before starting any project, payment terms must be agreed between the consultant and the client. Upon completion of a project, the consultant will request payment as follows:

  • For projects with a duration of one month or less:
    • Payment shall be made once the project is completed
    • The consultant shall submit a request for payment
    • Upon client approval for work performed, the client shall pay within 30 days
    • ABV will transfer the funds to the consultant within 5 business days less ABV’s commission.
  • For Projects with a duration of a month or more: P
    • Payment shall be made upon completion of relevant milestones or tasks according to the agreement between the consultant and the client
    • The consultant shall manually enter key milestones onto the dashboard and will calculate the amount for each task or milestone
    • Upon completion of the relevant task or milestone, the consultant shall submit a request for payment
    • Upon client approval for work performed, the client shall pay ABV within 30 days. ABV will transfer the funds to the consultant within 5 business days less ABV’s commission.

Payments will be made in GBP, USD or EUR.  We can accept payments in local African currencies if the parties have agreed to do so.  However this will be subject to:

  • All costs related to bank transfer to be paid by the client and the consultant
  • Prior approval from ABV will be required to process the transaction in local currencies

Invoices will be submitted online, on the consultant dashboard or must be sent by email to accounting@africabv.com, with the client name as the reference.  A request for payment will be submitted by the consultant via his/her dashboard.

The invoice must contain the following information:

  • Company Name / Your own name if a sole trader
  • Billing address
  • VAT Number if applicable
  • Company Bank Details including account number, sort code and currency of account / your bank details if a sole trader
  • If a non-UK or non-sterling denominated bank account, please provide the IBAN and SWIFT/BIC number
  • Project reference
  • Summary of time spent and amount requested in the relevant currency
  • Summary of expense amounts requested for reimbursement if applicable
  • Your contact details including email and phone number

From our experience, the best way to get the most out of a consultant, who will be working alongside you during your project, is to create a detailed brief, so as to avoid any miscommunication, disappointment or errors going forward.

With Africa Business venture, you can request to be matched with a consultant who will support your exporting project.  To get started, we have created a simple form that you will need to fill out where you can detail your instructions clearly for your consultant.

Step 1: Submit a Thorough Project Brief

We highly recommend you spend time creating a detailed, clear and cast-iron brief.

The more information you provide, the easier it will be for your Project Delivery Manager to find the right consultant match for you. A poorly written or incomplete brief will lead to delays in executing your project, and could in turn mean that we may decide that your particular project is not a viable one to take on.

This guide will give you the basic tools and knowledge to assist you with drafting your best project brief. In addition, your Project Delivery Manager will guide you, where necessary, so that you can be confident that the project brief you submit, is the best.

Step 2: Create the Perfect Summary for your Project

Whenever possible, provide as much information as possible, whilst withholding confidential elements of your project, until you are 100% satisfied with the consultant matched to your project.

We have listed top tips below to assist you:

  1. Always Provide a Detailed Description of your Company & Include a Company Brochure:
    1. Your consultant will not know anything about your business to begin with
    2. Help him/her to understand it
    3. You can add links to brochures, videos, whitepapers, include products demo – send as much information as possible

Please detail how you intend to evaluate the work provided by the consultant? What factors will you take into consideration?

Can Cape Town be a future laboratory for sustainable water resource management?

Like many children of my generation, I have spent probably too much time in front of screens. Nevertheless, few programs I was lucky enough to see made a huge impact on my life and shaped my personality. Strangely, one of them was the inauguration of the “Grande Arche” in Paris business district “La Defense” in 1992. I was only 12 years old.

A concert was given and one song attracted my attention more than others “Being born somewhere” from the singer Maxime Le Forestier. A video played in the background showing African refugees escaping war, hunger and environmental catastrophes. I vividly remember one reporter highlighting the fact that if Europeans did not support conditions for development in African countries, Europe will face unprecedent pressure on its borders and no rule of law will prevent this movement. The image of African immigrants fleeing misery shocked me to date, and probably contributed early on to my convictions about the world, and the role I could play in it.  Unfortunately, this scenario has become reality.

This childhood memory came back to my mind recently when I was made aware of the water crisis in Cape Town. Despite the gravity of the situation and potential economic, environmental and political consequences over all of South Africa, only few deep analyses were provided by the mass media.

One thing that is always overlooked is the potential for Africa to become a laboratory of new solutions. The continent will face unprecedent challenges in the decades to come: growing number of cities over one million inhabitants; very young populations and pressure on natural resources.

South Africa is the most developed country in Africa. Cape Town is the envy for many European cities: gorgeous weather, amazing landscapes and vibrant culture. I would gladly live there. Nevertheless, like many big cities a fragile equilibrium between different patch of population ensures that everybody enjoys the city. This balance is being questioned now and threatened.

Should we all be concerned by this situation in Cape Town?

We can always concentrate on the political aspects of the situation and blame local government for not anticipating enough for future issues, and for not taking the appropriate measures to avoid drought.

Nevertheless, I would like to go beyond politics and look at Cape Town as a new addition to the growing number of localities, having to develop new inventive solutions to meet the growing demand of populations. With scarce water resources and low rainfall, WWF predicts that two degrees increase in global temperature will mean four degrees increase in South Africa, which will contribute even more to growing periods of complete drought.

Cape Town is an interesting example to follow for Western countries as this city is as close as it can be to our modern cities, in particular Mediterranean cities.  The challenges faced by this city is well summarized by Nomvula Mokonyane, Minister for Water and Sanitation, in her 2015 speech to Parliament:

In order to achieve (our) strategic priorities we have realised that there is a need  for increased impetus and pace. This calls for a revolution, a water and sanitarian revolution to reclaim and better manage our water in order to tackle the triple challenges of inequality, poverty and unemployment”.

As Europeans, we should not overlook the water crisis in Cape Town, as so many learnings can come from the solutions implemented and future failures, that will be necessary to pave the way to reaching a sustainable management of water resources.

Starting as an Independent Power Producer in Cote d’Ivoire

Yesterday we hosted one of our hugely successful monthly webinars and this month’s topic is about “Starting as an independent Power Producer in Cote d’Ivoire”. The guest host for this session was Mr. Toure Sultan Abdoul Karim, who is the Directory of Programming of Public Investments for the Ministry of Planning and Development, Cote d’Ivoire.

In today’s article, we will outline what was discussed.  If you are business owner looking to invest in Africa, this is very much for you.

The Cote d’Ivoire Government has an ambition to become an industry-driven economy that is open to the rest of world.

Cote d’Ivoire:

Cote d’Ivoire new energy policy has the following objectives:

Investments in the energy sector are at the centre of the strategy for Cote d’Ivoire to become an emerging market.

  • To generate sufficient electricity and demand side management
  • To increase installed capacity by approximately 150 MW each year
  • To diversify the generation mix, which currently depends heavily on domestic natural gas
  • To increase participation of independent power producers (IPPs)
  • To improve the institutional framework
  • To restore the financial viability of the energy sector – tariff adjustments and loss reduction

A new energy policy, adopted in 2013 aims to:

  • Increase renewable energy share in national energy mix from 1% in 2015 to 16% in 2030
  • Diversify energy production sources from 80 % fossil fuel and 20 % renewables in 2015, to 66 % fossil fuel and 34 % renewable in 2020
  • To 58 % fossil fuel and 42 % renewable energy in 2030

In order for you to make a spontaneous proposal to the Ministry of Energy for a planned project, you will need to:

  • Submit a technical and financial offer to Management of the structure of the project
  • The offer will be assessed by the relevant authorities
  • Once approved, a discussion regarding possible clarification and or negotiations will be held
  • From here, a signature of approval by the authorities will mean your project has been approved

Cote d’Ivoire Investment Zones & VAT:

In order to boost investments, an attractive investment regime has been developed.

There are 3 investments zones regimes that have been created with benefits granted for each of them

  • In the investment phase, there is between 40-50% reduction in the amount of custom duties that are paid for equipment, materials as well as first batch of spare parts
  • There is also total exemption from VAT – see below:

Cote d’Ivoire’s Investors Protection:

There are sixteen specific guarantees when you invest in Cote d’Ivoire.  The key guarantees (by Law) we would like to highlight are:

  • You are offered the freedom to invest
  • You have equal rights
  • You have freedom to access foreign currencies
  • You have stability of benefits
  • You will not need to be nationalised and there is no risk of expropriation

Review of a Solar Project in Rural Cote d’Ivoire

Providing electricity to remote villages is one of the key objectives of the Government of Cote d’Ivoire using renewable energy to create mini-grids. One of the latest projects is the 7-solar hybrid mini-grid in the Zazan region.

We interviewed Azimut 360, the project manager company in charge of the installation of the mini-grids for all the villages.

 

The company got involved in the project through formulating a proposal following a call for proposals from Energy Facility II, a joint European and ACP countries program (African, Caribbean and Pacific countries) established in 2005, aiming at co-financing projects increasing access to modern and sustainable energy services for ACP countries. Thanks to their previous knowledge of running projects in Africa (The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Tchad, Mali, Angola and Morocco so far), they managed to get the funding for this project.

Although Azimut 360 faced a number of issues with the local partners,

Azimut360 advised that the key component for their success comes down to the quality and the role of the local partner. For this project, they collaborated with the NGO Akwaba (welcome in Ivorian) to which the responsibility of the social and economic aspect of the project was given. That being said, the organisation faced a number of issues with their local contacts but still managed to overcome any difficulty.

To facilitate the implementation of the project on the ground and better communication with locals, engineers sent to Cote d’Ivoire were both fluent in English and French. The project was financed as described below:

The total capacity for the 7 micro-grids is218,4 kWp. Batteries allow storage of energy for night use. Each installation has a generator that guarantees service if the weather conditions are unfavourable.In addition, 17200m of electrical network was deployed to provide subscribers and new public lighting. For each household, the electricity meters control and limit the electricity consumption.Thanks to the GbrekoKanian project, the 7 villages produce, distribute and consume their own energy

For each village, an association was created to manage the micro-grid. Each association involved the following local community representatives:

– A president,
– A book keeper,
– A representative of women,
– A representative of the youth
– A representative of the most senior members of the community

Such set up guarantees the involvement of the community and ensure the auto-management of the local micro-grids. The members of each association are composed of the subscribers to the grid network.

Additionally, a Federation grouping the 7 local associations has been created to strength and stimulate synergies amongst the 7 villages.In each village, a community “office” serving as a services hub for the village was created. Among the many benefits of the village for the local population, the various micro-grids provide electricity to:

• 698 households
• 6 schools
• A health centre
• 7 wheat mills
• 7 water pumps
• 336 street lights

In addition, the project created 11 jobs of technicians and new possibilities for the local youth with potential for development of local businesses.

Other contributions for local communities relate to public lighting, and women, in special concern, received major benefits from electrical water pumps.
